Section 7-131a
of the Connecticut General Statutes enables towns and
cities in Connecticut to establish a Conservation Commission
"for the development, conservation, supervision and regulation
of natural resources, including water resources within
its territorial limits." While the role of a Conservation
Commission is advisory, one of its most significant assignments
is its role in reviewing pending land use applications
and reporting to planning and zoning and inland wetland
commissions concerning those applications. It is also
responsible for preparing an inventory of natural resources
which should act as a baseline for a town's preservation
and conservation policies.
The Representative Town Meeting established the present
Branford Conservation and Environment Commission in 1992
by enacting Ordinances 21-1 through 21-7 of the Branford
Code which superseded a former chapter which was adopted
in 1964. In addition to the duties set forth by state
statute, the Code charges the Conservation with investigating
pollution, including alleged violations of clean air and
clean water standards, and advising the Board of Selectmen
and the RTM about environmental matters concerning the
Town of Branford.
It is the goal of the Branford Conservation and Environment
Commission to fulfill its role as established by state
statute and town ordinance with diligence and openness.
Individuals who are interested in helping us to fulfill
our mission are invited to contact any member of the Conservation
Commission. |
